Statement Following $10 Million for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program Included in May Revise

Governor Newsom Includes Critical Funding Requested by JPAC and Jewish Caucus in His Updated Budget Proposal May 12, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA – On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom released his updated proposed budget, called the May Revise. His $306 billion spending plan is still $31.5 billion short of projected revenues, and the Governor announced budget cuts and delays to meet the deficit. Despite the need for cuts, he added a $10 million line item for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. In response to the announcement, JPAC's executive Director David Bocarsly released the following statement:

"Governor Gavin Newsom just proposed allocating $10 million for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, a top priority for JPAC and the Legislative Jewish Caucus, to ensure at-risk institutions are protected from hate-motivated violence. Thank you, Governor, for you continued commitment to our community.

"This announcement comes a week after the Jewish Caucus met with the Governor, and days after JPAC Capitol Summit, where 300 Jewish leaders convened in Sacramento to discuss our community's priorities with 103 legislators and the Governor's office. It's clear the California Jewish voice is being heard.

"Special thanks to co-chairs Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and Senator Scott Wiener, vice chair Senator Josh Becker, and the entire Jewish Caucus for championing this critical budget item. If included in the final budget deal, this will go a long way to ensuring the safety of California's vulnerable communities, Jewish and non-Jewish alike.

"Our work here is not done. With record-high levels of hate-motivated violence targeting all vulnerable communities, the demand for this coveted program is through the roof. We look forward to our continued work with the Governor's office, the legislature, and the Jewish Caucus to ensure substantial funding for this program is included in the final budget."
