Jewish California Statement on 2025 Hate Crime in California Report
SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, California Attorney General Rob Bonta released the 2025 Hate Crime in California report. In response, Jewish California CEO David Bocarsly released the following statement:
"The 2025 report brings a measure of welcome news: anti-Jewish hate crime events in California fell 6.8% from 310 in 2024 to 289 in 2025. We are relieved to see that number – and the number of total hate crimes – move in the right direction.
"The full picture, though, demands more than cautious optimism. In 2025, Jews – roughly 3% of California's population – experienced the second-highest number of hate crime events of any group in the state, behind only Black Californians. Anti-Jewish events accounted for nearly 15% of all hate crime events statewide. And while we welcome the year-over-year improvement, 289 events is still more than triple the 82 recorded just a decade ago, in 2016.
"We are also saddened by what this report shows for our neighbors. Anti-Latino hate crimes surged 30% and anti-trans events rose by 23%. Hate crimes targeting Muslim and Sikh Californians increased dramatically. And Anti-citizenship status events nearly tripled. Behind each of these numbers is a person targeted for who they are.
"Jewish California stands with every community facing hate. We urge the Legislature and the Governor to treat this report as a call to redouble protection for all Californians."
